Despite the fact that boys achieved more of the A and A* grades at A-level this year fewer of them are going to university. For every four girls who applied to university in England this year, there were fewer than three boys.

Some experts say boys may be wise to shun expensive university fees in favour of alternatives such as apprenticeships or starting their own businesses.

Boys have been found to take more risks than girls and and more inclined to follow their dream.
