Lifetime’s Barnsley Businesses Inspiring Students venture is set to take a big step forward in the next few weeks – with a number of speakers lined up to go into local school Horizon College to deliver ‘their story’.

One of the first will be the BBC’s 2012 Young Apprentice winner Ashleigh-Porter Exley, who has been booked in to speak to the Year 10 assembly on Friday, December 13.

Ashleigh (pictured) currently works for Reeds Rains Estate and Letting Agents – but also does a lot of work for Claire Young’s School Speakers, travelling around presenting motivational talks and workshops.

She kindly agreed to be part of our BBIS project, being impressed not only by the passion and interest Barnsley Businesses Inspiring Students generated; but also by the quality of speakers that have come on board; and by the eagerness of both Horizon staff and students for the venture.

Said Ashleigh: “I went to Wath Comprehensive School and have been in employment since the age of 13!

“I was never really an A grade student and decided once leaving school with 14 GCSE grade Cs and above that I was going down the Apprenticeship route and found myself working for a local accountant, studying my AAT qualification and at one point working four jobs at once!

“I then went on to work for Martin and Co, the UK’s Number One letting company.

“After this I had a life-changing opportunity to take part in the BBC1 show ‘Young Apprentice’. Only 12 candidates got selected out of the 28,000 that applied and I went on to win the show and was given a £25k investment from Lord Alan Sugar.

“I missed home turf while away filming in London but had the most amazing experience and met some amazing people, but couldn’t wait to get home as it was difficult for me to be away from my family.

“On coming ‘home’ I started a job with Courier Logistics, a vibrant, very well established and lively company, and now work for Reeds Rains Estate Agents.

“I believe if you fail to prepare you should prepare to fail – and I believe being from South Yorkshire is a bloomin’ good advantage!

“I can be slightly crazy at times and I believe my employers, parents and friends would vouch for that! But I wouldn’t have it any other way, I imagine it’s boring being normal!”
